Laced with Fear
You smile at something I said
Probably some stupid joke
Then the brightness fades as quickly
Remembers other words I’ve spoke
I’ve seen the weariness in your eyes
I know a smile laced with fear
That I’ll head back to the old days
And we’ll lose another year
They say it’s not all my fault
There’s some tick lodged in my brain
Makes it easier to handle
Can’t get back the time it’s drained
I’ve seen the weariness in your eyes
I know a smile laced with fear
That I’ll head back to the old days
And we’ll lose another year
You’re the reason I’m here
Why I still have debts to pay
Why I wake up in the morning
Earn your trust day by day
I’ve seen the weariness in your eyes
I know a smile laced with fear
That I’ll head back to the old days
And we’ll lose another year

A Few Dollars Short
Well I've been hitting the highway
Before the sun comes out
Been driving my dad's old truck
Keeping my head to the ground
Chasing that hand-me-down dream
Where we lay on a pillow at night
In a place that we call our own
Know it's out there just out of sight
Well I'm a few days late
And a few dollars short
Couch cushions had a few rusty coins
Add 'em up
Still need more
And I'm one too many decades too old
To still be playing this sport
I'm a few days late
And a few dollars short
Gramps told my father
Then he passed down to me
To get ahead in this life, do without
Never mentioned how long that might be
Well I'll turn on the radio
This country's getting somewhere
I'll fall in line behind the setting sun
Til that thing goes up in a flare
Well I'm a few days late
And a few dollars short
Couch cushions had a few rusty coins
Add 'em up
Still need more
And I'm one too many decades too old
To still be playing this sport
I'm a few days late
And a few dollars short
One more time
I'm a few days late
And a few dollars
short

Cornfield
I’m telling you it was real
I grew up cross a cornfield
Where sitoo used to steal corn
And pick berries from out back
Planted us a garden
Everything we wanted
Learned love grows deepest
from the simplest of acts
From the simplest of acts
I’m telling you it was real
I grew up cross a cornfield
Where we’d head out in the morning
And we’d make it back by dark
Roam through bogs and backroads
All without a cellphone
Then we’d ride home with the sun
Where we were meant to park
That cornfield isn’t there now
I remember watching them plow
They cleared it all for a soccer ball
Just a big old empty void
No more corn for us to steal
Keep turning those wheels
Reap the lessons she sowed
Raising one of her boys
I’m telling you it was real
I grew up cross a cornfield
Where sitoo used to steal corn
And pick berries from out back
Planted us a garden
Everything we wanted
I learned love grows deepest
From the simplest of acts
I learned love grows deepest
From the simplest of acts
I learned love grows deepest
From the simplest of acts

House up on a Hill
When I was alive and young
I'd ride around this town
Collecting treasures off the ground
I'd roll up that old hill
Find some coins and broken tools
Store up those dime-store jewels
And I'd hide them in my room
Time has carried most away
But that land still remains
Where I built this house up on a hill
So when it rains (and it will)
The water's gonna roll down
To the field across the way
And there will come a day
When it feels like you may drown
I hope you know to come around
And then I was an old man
Those years just rolled on by
I said hello and it's alright
The storm will rage out there
I'm gonna be right here
For another some-odd years
Well, it wasn't perfect
Nothing ever is
That's what I leave for you kids
I leave this house up on a hill
So when it rains (and it will)
The water's gonna roll down
To the field across the way
And there will come a day
When it feels like you may drown
I hope you know to come around
I hope you know to come around
I hope you know to come around

Shrapnel
Said we caught shrapnel
Suppose that's true
The damage has been done
And there's nothing left to do
Except carry on and boy that's hard to explain
It's the like the blood flowing through our veins
Call it a virtue
I call that shit a curse
Waitin' on a person
Who keeps giving you their worst
Hoping time would heal
The shards left in your bones
Can I call
And we can talk on the phone?
We'll keep on talking
Like a couple little kids
They'll keep on acting
Like they don't know what they did
I don't know much except we're
Trying to leave behind
A little love
That will stand the test of time
Said we caught shrapnel
Suppose that's true
Damage has been done
And there's nothing left to do
Except carry on and boy that's hard to explain
It's the like the blood flowing through our veins

Woodland Waltz
We've walked through these woods
Many a-time
Seen all there was to see
Waded through flies and
Stomped through the snow
Danced under arch-shaped trees
As long as the trees
Turn up to the sun
As long as the rivers
Are able to run
As long as the rain
Rolls down from the hills
I'll be here beside you
You know that I will
The leaves here will change
Many a-time
And so will you and I
The path ends somewhere
As long as we're here
I'll be here, by your side
As long as the trees
Turn up to the sun
As long as the rivers
Are able to run
As long as the rain
Rolls down from the hills
I'll be here beside you
You know that I will
As long as the trees
Turn up to the sun
As long as the rivers
Are able to run
As long as the rain
Rolls down from the hills
I'll be here beside you
I'll be here beside you
I'll be here beside you
You know that I will

Porchlight
Well the sun was goin' down
And the bugs were coming out
Not far to go
Lost without a doubt
Cellphone up and died
Memory would light the way
Bats danced in the air
Like way back in the day
And big new empty houses loomed
Where tall grass used to buzz
Looking out that window
Ain't the same as it once was
The from a distance I did see
Through the darkness
just as clear as could be
A porchlight there for me
Shinin' right on there
For me
And under that porchlight, babe
There's nothing like your glow
And up those steps, darlin'
That's the only thing I know
In all the world there's no sight I'd rather see
Then that porchlight there for me
Shinin' right on there
For me
And under that porchlight, babe
There's nothing like your glow
And up those steps, darlin'
That's the only thing I know
In all the world there's no sight I'd rather see
Then that porchlight there for me
Shinin' right on there
For me
Said in all the world there's no sight I'd rather see
Then that porchlight there for me
Shinin' right on there
For me.
